Sleeve Design Competition

“Hey there! My name is Kristen and I had the pleasure of being the Marketing and Event Intern at The Ashman Plaza from May-December of 2021. I wanted to share with you one of the awesome ways that Live Oak connected with the community through art, and something exciting that you will see in the shop within the next couple of weeks.

In the beginning of the summer of 2021 Renee’ passed the idea to me of having a sleeve design competition and I was able to head the planning and execution of the competition through the Live Oak social media platforms. I used an elimination method and multiple rounds of voting to carry out the competition by having the community of Live Oak Coffeehouse submit designs, vote, and select a winner for the sleeve design competition. The top three winning designers of the competition would win Live Oak gift cards and their sleeve design printed onto a box of our sleeves and used in the coffeehouse.

How did the competition work?

When the competition started, community members could pick up a Live Oak Coffeehouse sleeve from the Bay City or Midland location. Once they had their sleeve, they had two weeks to design their sleeve using any mediums or colors they desired. They could draw, paint, color or sketch in any color or black and white. The could design the front and the back of the sleeve as well. All designed sleeves were to be returned to either location. We also accepted graphic design submissions. After all sleeves were accounted for, I was in charge of hosting the voting which took place in three rounds.

Voting!

For the voting I photographed all the sleeves and we used instagram polls and Facebook posts to determine who would move on to the next round. For instagram polls we would pair two sleeves against each other and whoever got more of the majority vote would mean they got a vote towards the next round. For Facebook we would post and have people vote for one sleeve and whichever sleeves had the most votes between Facebook and Instagram would be moved onto the next round. We narrowed it down to 20, then to 10, and then got the top 3 winning designs.

Sleeves in the shop!

The process of transferring the art into graphics was a bit more complex than we had originally planned and therefore it took longer than initially expected. The three winners of the competition have been working with us to transfer their designs to graphics and the sleeves have recently been delivered to Live Oak and will be served in the shop starting within the next couple weeks!

Live Oak Coffeehouse incorporates their values into every event and program that they run. They like coffee but LOVE people, and this shows another one of the ways that they love and support the people in the community so well.”
